Octylphenol (OP)
Octylphenol (OP) is used as an intermediate in resin and surfactant manufacturing. It is also an endocrine disruptor and can injure the male reproductive system.
Octylphenol (OP) serves as an intermediate in producing phenolic resins and octylphenol ethoxylates. Phenolic resins, primarily used in rubber processing for tire manufacturing, account for 82% of its application. Additionally, it is used in fungicides, nonionic surfactants, and dyestuffs. Octylphenol ethoxylates find use in emulsion polymerization, textile processing, water-based paints, and fungicide.
OP can bioaccumulate in fish, and is toxic to aquatic life. As an endocrine disruptor with estrogenic activity, octylphenol poses a risk to animals and humans. OP is also a reproductive toxin, and can injure the male reproductive system.
